Kitchen Plumbing
in Krugersdorp

Kitchen plumbing in Krugersdorp: a new sink or mixer, a trap that leaks or keeps blocking, a dishwasher or washing machine connected properly. Every waste runs through a trap, every connection is run before the cupboard is packed again, and the grease rules are explained first.

What usually brings a plumber to the kitchen

Most kitchen jobs start in the cupboard under the sink. A few end at the boundary.

  • A sink that drains slowly or gurgles. A trap or waste pipe narrowing with fat and food, or a venting problem further along.
  • Water in the cupboard under the sink. A loose trap nut, a split waste, or a mixer's flexible hose giving way.
  • A new sink or a different mixer. A new waste, trap and isolating valves, with the tap outlet set clear of the sink's rim.
  • A dishwasher or washing machine going in. A supply point, and a drain that runs through a trap into the waste pipe.
  • A food-waste disposer. Above a 15 A, 550 W rating, the national drainage rules want it registered or shown on an approved plan first.
  • Hot water that never gets hot enough at the sink. The national standard wants at least 45 °C at a kitchen sink, to melt fats.

Fat down the sink can become your bill for the municipal sewer

Mogale City's by-laws ban grease that can block a sewer, and they put the cost of clearing the municipality's own pipe on the owner when the blockage came from the property.

Your drains end at the connecting point, at or near the boundary. Past it runs the connecting sewer, which Mogale City's Water Services By-laws define as a pipe the municipality owns, carrying sewage from your property to the sewer beyond it. On the face of it, a blockage in that pipe is the municipality's to clear.

Clause 117.4 adds the condition that matters. If your drainage overflows because the connecting sewer is blocked, and the municipality is reasonably satisfied the obstruction came from your drainage installation, the owner is liable for the cost of clearing it at the municipality's charge. Clause 117.3 adds that if paving or lawn has to be lifted to clear a blockage, the municipality is not liable for putting it back.

Clause 81.1 says what may not go into a sewer in the first place, and it names oil, grease, fat and detergents capable of obstructing the flow. Fat poured down a sink while hot can travel well past the trap before it cools and sets on the pipe wall, so the blockage it causes need not be under your kitchen at all. It can sit just over the boundary, in the pipe the clause makes your bill.

A grease trap is the answer only in some homes: the by-laws require one instead of a gully where sewage goes to a French drain, or where the municipality decides grease is likely to cause trouble. Everywhere else the fix is habit rather than hardware. Scrape plates into the bin, wipe greasy pans with paper first, and let cooking fat set in a tin.

When a kitchen line does block, write down what came out of it and where the blockage sat in relation to the boundary. If the municipality ever sends a clearing charge, that note is the record you will want.

Keep fat, oil and grease out of the sink. In Mogale City a blockage traced back to your drains can be billed to you even when it sits in the municipality's pipe.

Section from a kitchen sink to the street: the sink drains through a trap and a waste pipe to a gully outside, then along the property's drain to the connecting point at the boundary, then along the municipality's connecting sewer to the sewer main, where a lump of set fat partly blocks the connecting sewer kitchen sink trap gully your drains: yours to maintain the municipality's connecting sewer boundary and connecting point fat that set here: if it came from your drains, the owner pays to clear it sewer main

How kitchen plumbing is priced

Swapping a part and moving a sink are very different jobs, so the quote separates them.

Always part of it

  • A look under the sink and at the gully outside before the quote
  • An isolating valve on every supply to a tap or appliance
  • Every waste through a trap, every joint checked with water running
  • The new connections run and checked with you there

What moves the number

  • A like-for-like swap, or a sink moved to a new wall or an island
  • Appliance points that do not exist yet
  • Access: built-in cupboards, tiled splashbacks, the drain outside
  • A food-waste disposer, and registering it where the rules require

What you get in writing

  • What was fitted, and where each supply and drain runs
  • What came out of a blocked line, and where it was
  • Anything found beyond the kitchen, priced on its own

From the cupboard under the sink to a dry floor

Four steps, and the drain outside is part of the first look.

  1. Tell us what is happening

A leak, a slow drain, or a new sink or appliance. Photos of the cupboard under the sink help.

  2. Under the sink and outside

The trap, the waste and the gully outside are checked, because a kitchen problem can sit beyond the kitchen.

  3. Priced in writing

Each connection and part on its own line, before anything is undone.

  4. Connected and run

Taps, appliances and drains are run with you there, and the cupboard is left dry.

Kitchen plumbing questions

Cost first, then appliances, grease and the questions that come up mid-renovation.

What does kitchen plumbing cost in Krugersdorp?

A trap, a mixer or a flexible hose is a short job and a small price. Moving the sink, adding appliance points or clearing a line that has set solid with fat takes longer, and the drain outside may need work as well. The price comes after a look under the sink and at the gully, as a written list of parts and labour.

Can I connect the dishwasher myself?

The plumbing side is two connections: a cold supply with its own isolating valve, and a drain that, under the national drainage standard, has to run through a trap into a waste pipe. If there is no drain point yet, adding one changes the drainage, and that is work for a qualified plumber rather than a weekend job.

Does the washing machine need a non-return valve?

Not if the machine already has backflow protection built in, which the national water installation standard accepts as enough on its own. Check the manual before paying for an extra valve. A separate isolating valve on each appliance supply is still worth having: it lets you stop a leaking machine and keep the rest of the house running.

Does my kitchen need a grease trap?

Most homes on the municipal sewer do not. Mogale City's by-laws require one instead of a gully where the sewage goes to a French drain, or where the municipality decides grease from the property is likely to cause trouble. For everyone else, keeping fat out of the sink does the same job for nothing.

Are food-waste disposers allowed?

They are, within limits set by the national drainage standard. Anything rated above 15 A and 550 W needs the local authority's say-so first, by registration or on an approved plan. Smaller units need no such step, but every one has to discharge through a P-trap holding a water seal at least 75 mm deep. The rating plate settles which group yours is in.

The cupboard under the sink keeps getting wet. Where is it coming from?

Look at three places in this order: the trap nuts, which loosen with knocks from pots and bins; the flexible hoses on the mixer, which perish with age; and the joint where the waste leaves through the wall. Put a dry cloth under each and run the tap. The wet one is the leak.

Can the sink move to an island?

Yes, but it is the biggest kitchen job there is. The water supply and a new drain both have to cross the floor, and the drain needs a steady fall to the existing line, which can mean cutting the slab. A new drain run is an alteration under Mogale City's by-laws, so it is approved and inspected before the floor is closed.

Why does the kitchen hot tap take so long to run hot?

Usually the distance from the geyser. SANS 10252-1 limits the unheated pipe between a geyser and a tap to what holds 4 litres, and it asks for at least 45 °C at a kitchen sink. A long run to a kitchen at the far end of the house misses both, and a shorter route or a small point-of-use heater fixes it.

Where kitchen work often leads

A kitchen problem can be a drain problem, and a renovation rarely stops at one room.
