Emergency Plumber

An emergency plumber in Krugersdorp for burst pipes, a split geyser, or sewage coming up through a drain. Before anyone arrives, the most useful thing is to stop the water, and this page shows how. The visit amount is said on the phone before you decide.

What to do in the first five minutes
Each emergency has one thing you can do straight away. Do that first, then report it below.
- A burst pipe spraying or pouring. Close the main valve at the water meter. That stops everything on your side.
- A geyser leaking through the ceiling. Switch the geyser off at its isolator or the board, then close its cold supply valve.
- Sewage coming up in a shower, bath or gully. Stop using water anywhere in the house until the line is cleared.
- Water rising out of the ground, paving lifting. Close the meter valve and keep cars and people off the patch.
- No water at all. Check with a neighbour and the municipality first: it may be a supply outage, not your plumbing.
- A toilet overflowing. Close the small stop valve on the pipe behind it, and do not flush again.
Water running into the ground is the emergency
A burst you can see is obvious. The one that drains away out of sight does more damage the longer it runs.
In April 2024 the Krugersdorp News reported on a resident of Third Street whose sidewalk pipe had burst. He said the water flowing beneath his driveway had damaged the foundation and opened holes that made it unsafe to walk or drive on. Nothing in the report says the ground there is dolomite, and it does not need to be: water moving through soil carries the soil with it, and paving or a slab above loses what was holding it up.
On dolomite land the stakes are higher. The Council for Geoscience describes a sinkhole as the collapse of an arch over a void, set off by water from leaking services or ponding, and warns that it can happen with little warning. The early signs it lists are cracks in walls and settlement in the ground. The precautions for dolomite land ask residents to report leaks and any subsidence promptly, and to make sure water does not dam up on their property.
So the first few minutes matter more than how fast a plumber arrives. Close the valve at the water meter, which stops everything on your side. If the burst is on the street side of the meter, report it to Mogale City as well, because that pipe is the municipality's to fix.
Then look, and photograph: new cracks in walls, a sunken patch in the lawn or paving, a door that has started to stick in its frame. Keep cars off any paving that sounds hollow or has dropped. Those details help whoever assesses the ground, and they belong in the plumber's notes and on the invoice.
When water is running into the ground, close the meter valve first and keep off any patch that has sunk. The pipe is the easy part to fix.
How an emergency call is priced
Emergencies are priced the same way as every other job: the visit on the phone, the repair in writing before it starts.
Always part of it
- Advice on the phone to stop the water before anyone arrives
- Making the place safe: water isolated, electrics kept clear
- Finding the cause, not only the wet spot
- A written price for the repair before it starts
What moves the number
- The time of day: if a visit outside working hours costs more, you hear the amount before anyone sets off
- What failed, and how much pipe has to be opened up to reach it
- A temporary repair now and the permanent one later, or one permanent repair
What you get in writing
- What failed and why, in plain words
- Photos of the damage and the failed part
- Any temporary repair named as temporary, with the permanent repair priced
What happens once you report it
Step one is yours, and it is the most important.
-
Water off
Close the valve at the meter, or the valve nearest the leak. Switch off the geyser if it is involved.
-
Report it
Say in the form what is happening and the suburb. We phone you back, and you hear the visit amount before anyone sets off.
-
Made safe, cause found
On arrival the leak is isolated properly and the cause traced, and the repair is priced.
-
Repaired and tested
The repair is done, the water is turned back on and the work is tested before anyone leaves.
Emergency questions
Cost first, then what to do while you wait.
What does an emergency plumber cost in Krugersdorp?
The visit amount is given on the phone, including whether the time of day changes it. The repair is priced on site once the cause is known, and you agree to it before it starts. In a real emergency the first job is stopping the water, which you can often do yourself before anyone arrives.
Where is my water meter and main valve?
The meter is usually at the boundary, in a box set into the pavement or the verge, with the valve that shuts off the house beside it. Find it now, while nothing is leaking, and check that it turns. A seized valve is far easier to deal with on a quiet day.
The burst is in the street. Is that a plumber's job?
Not ours. A pipe on the street side of the meter belongs to Mogale City, so report it to the municipality. If water from it is running onto or under your property, photograph it and note the time, then close your meter valve so you are not losing water on your side as well.
Water is coming through the ceiling. What should I do first?
Keep clear of lights and plugs in the wet area and switch that circuit off at the board. If the geyser is above, switch it off too, then close the cold supply valve to the geyser or the main valve at the meter. Put a bucket under the worst drip and, if the ceiling is bulging, keep people out from under it.
Sewage is coming up in the shower. Is it dangerous?
It is unpleasant and unhygienic, so keep children and pets away and do not use any water in the house, because every flush and tap adds to the backup. Open windows, and do not try to clear the main line with household chemicals. It usually means the main sewer line is blocked between the house and the street.
Will I get a temporary fix or a proper repair?
Where a permanent repair can be done safely on the spot, that is what is priced. When it cannot, for example when a part has to be fetched or a wall has to dry first, a temporary repair stops the water, it is written on the invoice as temporary, and the permanent repair comes with its own price.
There is a new crack in my wall and a wet patch outside. Could it be the plumbing?
It could be. Shut every tap and look at the meter. Movement means water is leaving the pipes somewhere past the meter. On dolomite land, cracks and sinking ground are the warning signs the Council for Geoscience describes, so close the meter valve and have the ground looked at as well as the pipe.
We have no water at all. Is it a plumbing emergency?
First check whether the street has water: ask a neighbour and look for Mogale City supply notices. Outages and low pressure after supply work are a municipal matter. If only your house is dry, the cause is usually a closed or failed valve at the meter, or a burst somewhere on your side.
After the emergency
Once the water is off, the cause often belongs to one of these.
